Tasting notes
First brew
- Didn't take any notes
- Seaweed smell, seaweed taste
- Threw it out
Second brew
Brewing method:: Western
Brewing temperature:: 100° C
Weight:: 3 g
Volume:: 250 mi
Rinse:: 10 s
Steep time:: 10 s
- Nice deep golden liquor
- Light fragrance - seaweed scent almost dissipated
- Seaweed taste almost gone but so is any other flavour
Third brew
Based on western style brewing advice from this website
Brewing method:: Western
Brewing temperature:: 100° C
Weight:: 5 g
Volume:: 300 ml
Rinse::
Steep time:: 3 m
- Dark golden brown liquor (though possibly the green mug is deceptive)
- Earthy scent. Still some seaweed notes but less in your face
- Getting some of the earthy, mineral notes common in these rock oolongs. Some seaweed taste and I little bit of astringency in the aftertaste
- Experiencing come of the cooling properties (Yan Yun)
- Also my thumb is twitching but I don't know how related that is
- Definitely drinkable brewed like this, but I just don't see myself reaching for it
It might just be that rock oolongs aren't for me. I'll probably try a different rock oolong in the future, but for now I'm happy exploring the other oolong types.
Fourth brew
Brewing method:: Western
Brewing temperature:: ° C
Weight::3 g
Volume:: 150 ml
Rinse::
Steep time:: 3 m
- Dark golden brown liquor, almost like a black tea
- still has an earthy, lightly seaweed scent
- definitely getting a mineral taste
- there's a little bit of a seaweed taste if I burp
- need to drink it while its hot as it gets more astringent as it cools
